THORNBURY Town manager Andy Davies is looking to finish the Gloucestershire County League season in the top five after a great month for the club.

Thornbury have played some superb football this season to win six out of eight matches, with one draw and one defeat.

And that is without their goal machine striker Craig Lancastle who has been injured for a few weeks but is due back imminently.

The club added to their victories on Saturday when they went to Kingswood and beat them 2-1. Thornbury now have just unbeaten Stonehouse Town above them.

Davies said their success so far is down to teamwork and players stepping up to the plate. Asked if he was surprised by Thornbury’s rise to the top, he insisted: “No, I’m not!”

The manager said: “It’s going well this year so far. Even the game we lost, we should have won.”

The squad have been contributing to the goal tally. Midfielder-cum-striker Luke Franklin’s name, in particular, has cropped up on the scoresheets a lot this season.

Davies added: “Craig has been injured for four games. He had a fracture (metatarsal) in his left foot against Stonehouse.

“Everyone else has been jumping in with goals. Luke has been getting them.”

But Davies is not letting Thornbury rest on their laurels as any complacency could see them drop down the table as quickly as they have risen.

“Nobody is getting carried away,” he said. “We have good momentum at the moment which brings confidence and the lads believe in their own ability.”

Winning the league title is ‘too far away’ for the manager to contemplate but Stonehouse look odds on to take that crown at the moment.

The targets then are a good finish. “Top five is our aim,” said Davies. “We are not even thinking about winning the league. Stonehouse have not lost yet but they will drop points because that’s football. That’s the way it is.

“Our players have set the bar high now and they need to stick to that. It’s about being up there and they have to stay up there now.”

Thornbury are home to Bishops Cleeve Reserves on Saturday.
