Winterbourne Utd 4 Elwood 2

WINTERBOURNE entertained Ellwood at the recreation ground on Saturday in the last league game of the season and came away with three points after a superb team performance and claiming runners up spot in the process.

Bourne start the match on the front foot and we're playing some great free flowing football. It was one of these move that ended up with Sam Hopes played through on goal but his attempt failed to find the target.

Ellwood were struggling to get into the game and were working hard to contain the home team.

Winterbourne nearly scored when Tommie Bright rattle the cross bar from just inside the box. Kieran Joseph was next to nearly break the deadlock but his attempt was saved by the visiting keeper.

He was not to be denied however when the he found himself inside the box and the ball fell to him and he calmly slotted the ball home to give Bourne a deserved lead. Bourne nearly extend the lead when Bright hit the cross bar again !

In a rare attack into Winterbourne’s half Ellwood earned a free kick just outside the box. From the resulting free kick the attempt on goal was initially saved by Thorne in goal but the ball rebounded off the keeper and the Ellwood striker slotted home.

This goal energised the visitors and a few minutes later they took the lead against the run of play after a long range shot beat the keeper.

Winterbourne respond well and again saw an attempt hit the crossbar after a fine save by the Ellwood keeper.

Winterbourne drew level from a corner kick when the attempt on goal by Kieran Joseph was caught by the keeper but the keeper was behind the line with ball and a goal was awarded the give Joseph his second of the game.

The second half started the home team on the front foot but they couldn't get any clear cut chances. Ellwood were now struggling to get out of their half as wave after wave of attack saw Bourne push to regain the lead.

The pressure eventually told and the home team did regain the lead from a great corner kick was swung into the back post and found Mike Jones climbing highest to nod the ball home to make it 3-2.

The game then became a little scrappy with neither team having any clear cut chances.

Winterbourne then made the game safe when Tommie Bright was rewarded with a goal after going close so many time earlier in the match he found himself just in Ellwood half with time and space he looked up and hit a a great shot over the Ellwood keeper to make it 4-3.

Bright then nearly made it 5 after some great play on the left by Kieran Joseph played the ball to Bright who's first time curling attempt for 30 yards out went narrowly wide.

The final whistle then blew on the last game of the season which saw Winterbourne finish runners up in the league after winning 13 losing one and drawing one game and only conceding 16 goals all season.

All in all a very successful season.
