PAUL Barrington (InPlay Golf, Bristol) seldom fares well at Somerset coastal course Brean but he made it a clean sweep on his latest visit in the opening Total Triumph Gloucester and Somerset PGA Summer Series.

He not only matched early leader Giuseppe Licata (Chipping Sodbury), the winter Order of Merit winner, he also collected the birdie and Over 40’s sweeps as well.

He started with a birdie, dropped his only shots at the next two holes and added further birdies at seventh and eighth before coming home in regulation.

Licata continued his good form and was the only player not to drop a shot. His solitary birdie came at the driveable par four 10th. Vital par-saving putts on the closing three holes maintained his unblemished card.

In some very un-summer like conditions the one-under-par 68 rounds will stand as course records as it was the first PGA event to be held under summer rules over the latest Brean layout.

Steady rain fell throughout the day making it a miserable experience and birdies were rare although the course held well.

Ed Goodwin (Cirencester) was three shots off the pace in third while host pro Andrew March and Russ Berry (Broadway) shared fourth on 74.
