SAM Vile smashed a six off the last ball of the game to give Chipping Sodbury seconds a thrilling five-wicket home win against Tetbury in Gloucestershire County League Division Two.

Rain threatened to ruin this game which was reduced to a 29-overs per side contest by a couple of weather interruptions.

But perseverance paid off with Sodbury going on to record their first victory of the campaign.

Tetbury, who lost the toss, posted a competitive 167-6 thanks mainly to opener James Westhead (69) and James Meacham (51 not), Ed Holden taking 2-37.

Sodbury’s reply owed much to Ben Makepeace (52), Nic Anderson (32) and skipper Bryan Jater (24) before heroics at the end from Vile, who finished unbeaten on 25.

Sodbury’s first team, meanwhile, suffered a disappointing setback away to Cheltenham Civil Service in the West of England Premier League's Gloucestershire division.

Spinner Nick Wake finished with career-best league figures of 6-45 from 8.1 overs as the home side were reduced to 141 all out after losing the toss.

But Sodbury also struggled with the bat and limped to 78 all out, new Paulton Rovers soccer boss John Rendell hitting 41.

Runs were also a problem in difficult conditions at the Ridings for Sodbury thirds, who were hustled out for 99 by St George, opener Rob Higgs (46) the only man to resist in this Bristol and District Division Seven encounter.

The target proved to be well within reach for Saints who coasted in by seven wickets.

Sodbury fourths, meanwhile, were skittled out at Saltford Fairway for only 23.
