Taunton Town 1 Yate Town 4

YATE Town produced a major shock on Tuesday night when they not just defeated previously unbeaten Taunton Town but drubbed them in the Evo-Stik South, West League.

And the hero of the night was Cameron Ebbutt who hit a hat-trick for the Bluebells that stunned the hosts and gave Yate their first league victory of the campaign.

It was a win that manager Paul Britton had been looking for since the start of August and, after losing 1-0 at home to Salisbury on Saturday, few would have expected the Bluebells to have gone to the high-flyers and comfortably turned them over.

Yate were 1-0 up at half-time after Ebbutt scored on 14 minutes, but Taunton’s Mark Preece equalised on the hour.

But the Bluebells profited from defensive mistakes and efficient counter-attacks to claim a deserved win.

Taunton started well with plenty of intensity and sharp passing, and nearly led inside five minutes as Wright clattered a header against the near post..

Simpson was denied by Yate goalkeeper Harvey Rivers, and it seemed like a goal was inevitable - only for it to come at the other end.

After the Peacocks needlessly conceded a corner, Lewis Leigh-Gilchrist picked up the clearance and crossed to the far post, where Ebbutt was left unmarked to head home on 14 minutes.

The Bluebells were able to stifle Taunton’s attacks with some solid defence which included an exceptional save from Rivers who denied Wright.

But, on the hour the home side hauled themselves level, Preece heading home White's corner kick.

But no sooner were they level than they were behind again, as hesitation in defence - with James Difford making a nuisance of himself - allowed Ebbutt to grab his second.

Taunton threw everything forward, making them especially vulnerable to the counter-attack.

And that left the dangerous Ebbutt like a child in a sweetshop at the other end of the pitch. He could have easily scored his third after five Yate players broke against two Taunton men, but missed when in on goal.

But he made no mistake after picking up Ryan Brett's poor back-pass and firing past Lloyd Irish on 79 minutes.

And the visitors made it safe with another counter-attack, as Ebbutt dinked the ball over for Leigh-Gilchrist to finish the match and secure an amazing win that takes Yate out of the bottom two as they look to do it again on Saturday with a clash at Didcot Town on Saturday.
