CHIPPING Sodbury’s Giuseppe Licata finished fifth in the Gloucester and Somerset PGA Medal competition, the Weston Super Mare Medal, at Weston Super Mare Golf Club last Thursday.

Licata had an up-and-down round which saw him bogey the par four first but get back to evens with a birdie on the par three third.

However, his round and confidence looked to be going when he struck bogey fives on both the fourth and fifth only to hit back with birdies on six and eight.

At even for the round going into the ninth, Licata started a poor few holes with a double bogey to make the turn at 37.

He then hit bogeys on ten and 11. But that was the last of his dropped shots. At four over for the round, he found his rhythm in the final seven holes to shoot five pars and two birdies on the way to a 72-shot, two over par round.

Nevertheless, Licata’s result further extended his lead at the top of the points table though as his nearest challenger, Cirencester’s Ed Goodwin, finished one place below him, sharing sixth with Tim Elliott (Tall Pines) on 73. Goodwin also won the award on offer for the leading player over forty.

The tournament was won by Alex Munro, from the Bristol Golf Centre, Hambrook, who hit a 69, one under par round.
