Cricket: Skipper Rendell inspires Sodbury to victory

4:53pm Wednesday 1st July 2009

CHIPPING SODBURY produced their best all-round performance of the season by far to beat Congresbury.

After opting to bat first, Sodbury openers Jamie Rendell and Craig Scully started steadily, seeing off the new ball before taking the attack to the home side.

Rendell started off quickest with a couple of superb cover drives but after a watchful first ten overs, Scully also joined in the run feast.

The pair put on over 150 before a tiring Rendell was run out for an excellent 64.

Scully continued to punish the Congresbury attack before he was eventually bowled for a season high 90.

James Hicks (18) and Harry Webb (22) continued the onslaught as Sodbury posted their highest total of the season.

Sodbury needed a couple of early wickets and Jamie Wakefield did not disappoint, removing the homes side’s overseas player for just seven.

Good work from Tom Febry and Andy Neale then saw the other opener run out and Congresbury were in trouble.

However the third wicket pairing steadied the ship and began to score freely as the Sodbury attacked struggled to contain them.

At 115-2 from 22 overs, Congresbury were well placed to challenge the Sodbury total.

However, the re-introduction of Wakefield and skipper, Jamie Rendell, bringing himself into the attack turned the game in Sodbury’s favour.

Wakefield clean bowled the dangerous Fisher for 54 as he finished with 2-46.

It was Rendell who stole the show though as he ripped through the Congresbury lower order, taking 5-34 from ten overs with a master class in spin bowling, and he was well supported by his team taking some sharp catches in the field.

The home side were all out for 167 leaving Sodbury winners by 67 runs to keep the pressure on at the top of the table.
