Rugby: Ashwin inspires Frampton to a deserved victory

4:54pm Wednesday 3rd February 2010

MIKE ASHWIN scored 15 points as Frampton took a much deserved win from their journey up the M5.

Frampton were rewarded for their efforts after just 15 minutes when centre Mike Ashwin crossed the line for a try which he also converted.

A small lack in concentration then saw Old Boys take hold of the play and they eventually crossed the Frampton line and successfully got the conversion to draw things level.

Just before half-time the Frampton pack increased the pressure.

After three scrums in succession the ball was eventually passed out along the line with centre Ashwin going over for the try.

At the start of the second half, Gloucester looked liked scoring but with great defence the ball was soon the other end of the pitch with an unconverted try for winger Alex Giles.

Frampton then found themselves down to 14 men as hooker Bennett served ten minutes in the bin.

Gloucester capitalised and scored an unconverted try.

Ashwin then stepped up to slot over a penalty.

Centre Ashwin again had a chance to increase the lead with a penalty but this one fell short.

At the final whistle it was a jubilant Frampton that left the field with a long overdue win.

Frampton Cotterell took the derby honours against Chipping Sodbury.

An early offence by the away side allowed Tom Bowen-Hall to step up and collect the three points.

Matt Bohr darted off from the back of the pack to cut through the defence and cross the line, extending the home side’s lead.

After several trundles amongst the forwards Mark Cadwick crossed the line for Frampton’s second try.

Sodbury did respond and some quick feet from the centre saw them score a try.

The second half brought no score as Frampton held on.

Aretians 21 Frampton Cotterell 3rds 60

A mixture of experience and pace proved too much for Aretians.

Winger James Smith capped off his 18th birthday by scoring five tries and giving the selectors something to think about.

Dean Morsner and Jay Suckling both crossed the line from the back row.

Further tries from veterans Mike Weaver, Andy Pullin and Carl Groves, gave a resounding victory to the third team who were led by replacement skipper Ricky ‘Sunbed’ Shepherd.

Veteran fly half Dave Lawrence kicked five of the ten conversion attempts.
