Zamaretto Division One South & West: Bishops Cleeve 2 Yate Town 1

BISHOPS CLEEVE striker Kevin Slack scored a stunning injury time goal to send former club Yate Town to their first defeat of the season last night.

With the last attack of the game, Cleeve centre-back Sam Avery burst forward before Julian Alsop laid the ball off to Slack, who struck first time from the edge of the box into the top corner of the net.

Yate handed a league debut to teenager Lewis Hughes but he had a difficult night up against the dangerous Elliot Kennedy, who gave the home side the lead on 24 minutes.

Ashley Caldwell dispossessed Adie Adams in the middle of the park and he released Kennedy, who hit the ball across goalkeeper Josh Dempsey from 15 yards into the bottom corner.

Yate responded immediately when a free kick by Rob Cousins near the left touchline found Edd Vahid at the back post and the captain scored with a looping header.

Dempsey made a good save diving to his left from Richard Mansell before Cousins shanked wide at the other end when Adams found him in space on the edge of the box.

Yate looked livelier after the introduction of substitutes Sam Duggan and Chris Lewis on the flanks in the second half.

Duggan had a shot deflected just over and with five minutes left Yate had claims for a penalty turned down after a clumsy looking challenge by Mansell on Russ Church in the box.

Alsop, who was named Cheltenham Town’s Supporters Player of the Year in League Two just four months ago, had a header cleared off the line by Tom Warren before laying on Slack’s last-gasp winner.
