YATE FA Cup hero Danny Wring said it was a ‘great feeling’ to be part of a giant-killing act.

Wring set Yate on their way to an historic 2-1 victory over Blue Square North high-flyers Oxford City with the opening goal in last Saturday’s encounter and they have been handed a home draw against Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South & West rivals North Leigh in the Third Qualifying Round.

The oldest cup competition in the world may have lost some of its appeal at the very top of the game, but there is no doubt the magic still exists for clubs at lower levels.

And it certainly means a lot to 25-year-old Wring, who was delighted to help Yate go further than they ever have done before and experience the biggest shock win of his career to date.

He said: “Hopefully this is it now and we can go on a little run. We’ve just got to keep going, keep passing that ball and believe in ourselves.

“In English football the FA Cup is massive. To be part of that and keep going is great for the club and good for the publicity.

“It’s a great feeling, the lads have been brilliant.

“For the goal, Adnan (Hiroli) put it in a good area and I struck it well.

“We were on top then and I thought we looked really dangerous and passed the ball really well.”

Wring has settled in well at Yate after completing a move from Bridgwater in the summer, producing some impressive performances in midfield.

He is now calling on the side to take their cup form into the league, where they are rooted to the bottom of the table with no points from four games.

They are yet to lose a game when keeping 11 players on the pitch this season, but that has proved a problem in the league with five players sent off so far.

Wring said: “The lads are great, we’ve just got to take this run into the league now and keep 11 players on the pitch and we can win games.

“The FA Cup’s great, but if we get a run in the league we’ll be flying.”

Yate boss Rob Cousins enjoyed some of the biggest highlights of his long playing career in the FA Cup, which included a win over Football League giants Cardiff City when he was at Bath City, and he was happy to get his first big scalp as a manager. He said: “We performed very well. The pleasing thing was that we beat them convincingly and they said themselves that we thoroughly deserved it.

“We’ve got to build on these cup performances because we’ve got a lot of games coming up and a lot of points up for grabs.”

Yate will be hoping to kick-start their league campaign with a rearranged home game against North Leigh on Tuesday (7.45pm), just four days before the sides meet in the FA Cup.

Tom Warren starts a three-game ban, while Scott Thomas and Mitchell Page serve one-game bans, but if North Leigh draw against Sholing in the FA Trophy this Saturday the replay would take precedence and league match will be postponed again, leaving all three to miss the FA Cup tie.
