CHELTENHAM Poetry Festival is offering a line-up of poetry and music this March, in celebration of the 70th birthday of internationally acclaimed, Gloucestershire-based guitarist, Gilbert Biberian, composer and guitarist.
Gilbert has been described as ‘one of the Giants of 20th Century Guitar’ (Soundboard), and as ‘one of the most original and creative spirits active in the field of the guitar, now or at any other time’ (Colin Cooper, Classical Guitar).
The event will include settings to music of Japanese haiku, French epigrammatic verse and Japanese poetry, which will be performed by classical guitarist Gilbert and sopranos Evelyne Beech and Wendy Nieper. Also participating will be Luke Dunlea and Raymond Burley, guitars; Matthew Morris and Sarah Ellis, flutes; Robert Perry, percussion.
Biberian at 70 will include music inspired by the poems of Jacques de Cailly, Yosano Akiko and Haiku by Hokushi, Basho and Moritake.
Gilbert Biberian is one of the most innovative performers and composers working in the field of the guitar today. His concerts are greeted with much acclaim for their high quality of artistry and musical energy. Keenly aware of the importance of creating a new body of work for the guitar, Gilbert Biberian has stimulated much original composition and, along with his own works, he has enriched the repertoire of the instrument for all time.
Biberain at 70 takes place on Saturday March 1, 7.30pm, at The Chapel, Francis Close Hall. Tickets £10/15 on door. Visit www.cheltenhampoetryfest.co.uk for more information.
