BRIT ‘ Breakthough Act 2014’ nominees London Grammar came to Bristol’s O2 Academy last night for the final date (rearranged) of their current tour.

Opening with ‘Hey Now’, the capacity crowd fell silent, as if entranced by a siren’s charms, whilst Hannah Reid sliced through the silence with her amazing vocal range. It’s one hell of a way to open a set, but also an opening gambit that pays off, as the usually rowdy Academy audience immediately gave the Nottingham University graduate the respect she deserves. Quiet and composed, and wearing an understated white top and jeans, Hannah is definitely star of the show.

The sold-out gig continued to hold everyone spellbound, as Hannah unique vocals led the trio through over an hour of pitch perfect songs from their debut album ‘If you wait’, which was released in September and reached Number 2 in the album charts.

It’s fair to say there was little action on stage, but when Hannah takes her place at the piano it’s with her back to the audience, giving fellow bandmates Dan Rothman and Dot Major their time in the spotlight. And it’s these magical spotlights that add an extra dimension to the gig, complimenting the almost trance-inducing numbers to perfection.

Tracks Wasting My Young Years, Flicker, Sights and an encore of Metal and Dust all provide glimpses of what brilliance lies ahead for London Grammar.

Yes, London Grammar’s output is almost as bleak and melancholy as they come, but the softly spoken youngsters - who played at the Dot-to-Dot Festival here in 2013 - made sure they paid tribute to Bristolian influences Massive Attack and Portishead in their rapid journey to fame, and also said a humble ‘thank you’ to the people who had filled the venue and bought their album.

As far as these guys are concerned, the best is still yet to come.
