BRITISH rockers You Me at Six are riding high on a wave of popularity at the moment, having just finished a headline tour in Europe before returning home for the British leg of their tour next week.

The five guys from Surrey will be delighting West Country fans when they play in Plymouth next Wednesday, April 2 , returning to the Pavillions where they performed back in November, supporting American group Thirty Seconds to Mars.

“It will be great to go back and do a full setlist,” said drummer Dan Flint, when he talked to The Gazette this week.

“There has been a lot of talk as to whether we should make the jump to a big arena tour, but we would rather do a full-on gigs for sold out venues like these. Having sold out Wembley in the past we like to keep things quite safe nowadays. Having said that, the Alexandra Palace gig in London is about 11,000, so we must be doing something right!”

The band have been spending a lot of time in the States recently, working with producer Neal Avron [Fall Out Boy, Linkin Park] on their new album “Cavalier Youth”, but does that mean that we can expect a new ‘Americanised’ You Me at Six?

“No, not at all,” says Dan. We really needed a producer like Neal, and he just tore us apart and made us look at our songs in an entirely new way. We respected him so much and we just wanted to learn more and more. I wouldn’t say we are more ‘American’ – just a lot better!"

And the new outlook seems to be paying off, as the band are making inroads in the States, which are notoriously difficult for Bristish rock acts to break.

“We have been added to a few American radio playlists,” says Dan.

"We’ve been around a long time now, and I don’t just play drums anymore – I get to play on all sorts of instruments and get really creative, which is great.”

“We’ve been blown away by the fans’ response to the album. Everyone has said how mature it sounds and how it flows from beginning to end, which is something we all wanted to achieve. Fans are really enjoying it, and they are spreading the word!"

You Me at Six are playing Plymouth Pavillions next Wednesday, April 2.
