Rambert's world class dancers perform The Castaways at the Theatre Royal, Bath
11:47am Monday 21st October 2013 in Theatre
RAMBERT makes its annual visit to the Theatre Royal Bath next week with a spectacular evening’s entertainment featuring The Castaways, a new work by renowned American choreographer Barak Marshall.
Named by the LA Times as a ‘Face to Watch’ in December 2012, Barak Marshall choreographs all over the world and is particularly well-known in Israel and the US, fusing traditional and contemporary styles. This is the first time he has created new work for a UK company and offers a rare opportunity to see a performance created by one of America’s most celebrated choreographers.
Barak Marshall creates dance that is vivid and theatrical and The Castaways is no exception. Punctuated with humour and catchy tunes, it is the story of the trials and triumphs of 12 lost souls who find themselves thrown together. Set and costume design will be by Jon Bausor, who designed the London 2012 Paralympics Opening Ceremony.
The 2013 autumn tour also sees Ashley Page, former Artistic Director of Scottish Ballet, return to Rambert to present Subterrain. This striking new work for five couples is set to atmospheric music by Aphex Twin and award-winning composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, whose recent work includes commissions for the Royal Opera House, ENO and BBC Proms. Completing the programme at the Theatre Royal Bath is Rambert’s version of Nijinsky’s seminal ballet L’Après-midi d’un faune – a nod to the Company’s roots – and What Wild Ecstasy, a modern day response from Artistic Director, Mark Baldwin. What Wild Ecstasy was choreographed to music commissioned for the London Cultural Olympiad and is inspired by 90s rave culture, with eye-popping costumes and dynamic dance.
Rambert returns to Bath this autumn with a thrilling programme that celebrates everything that the company does best: premiering exciting new dance alongside classic masterpieces and showcasing world class dancers, accompanied by live music performed by the critically acclaimed Rambert Orchestra.
The Castaways Tour 2013 appears at the Theatre Royal Bath from Thursday, October 31 to Saturday, November 2. Visit www.theatreroyal.org.uk for tickets and more information.
