BRISTOL theatre maker Nick Young has just returned from visiting his childhood home in Harare, Zimbabwe, to make a play about his early life there before he moved to the UK.
Peter and the Wolf (and Me) is an autobiographical piece about life for a child in Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe’s rule in the early 1980s. It explores his experience of living with his family, including his step-father - a Muslim ex-soldier who struggled with alcoholism.
Using the tale of Peter and the Wolf as a starting point, the play uses a blend of storytelling, pop hits of the day and energetic physical performance to revisit the tensions of that time. Live music is provided by local musician Omer Makessa.
It promises to build on its initial success at a test showing last year that one audience member described as “brilliant, energetic and subtle".
Peter and The Wolf (and Me) will be performed on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 March at the Bristol Old Vic. The play is part of Ferment – a season of new shows developed in association with the theatre.
