A SHOW described as the one of the funniest musicals ever written is being performed next month by Dursley Operatic and Dramatic Society when they stage A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.

The DODS are performing the classic Stephen Sondheim show between May 5 and 10 at the Lister Hall, Dursley.

The musical wowed audiences both on Broadway and the West End in the 1960s and 70s, starring legendary performances by Phil Silvers, Kenneth Connor and Frankie Howerd – the latter went on to star in the hit BBC comedy Up Pompeii that was inspired by the show.

With music by the acclaimed Stephen Sondheim and book by one of the creators of the classic sitcom M*A*S*H, Larry Gelbart, the show is a fast-paced and irreverent musical farce.

Director Sue Cheshire said: “This side-splitting musical is packed with fun, action and glorious, witty songs by Stephen Sondheim. As the song says, "Tragedy Tomorrow, Comedy Tonight!"

“Delightfully unsavoury characters, including a befuddled father with a shrewish wife, glamorous girls, lovers, and the Roman army are all drawn into the confusion, as the conniving and hilarious slave Pseudolus tries to win his freedom. An unforgettable night out for anyone and everyone!”
