Four finalists have been announced in the Volunteer of the Year category for the Pride of the Cotswolds awards.

Marisa Dexter

Marisa has helped hundreds of young mums with breastfeeding.

She has helped run a weekly breastfeeding support group in Dursley, part of the Gloucestershire Breastfeeding Supporters’ Network, since the group was formed in 2004.

One person who nominated Marisa said: “Without Marisa’s contribution so many women would not have received the support they needed.”

Another added: “She is there every Monday without fail.”

Graham and Juliette Harris

Gazette Series:

The couple, who run the Cirencester Signpost charity have dedicated their nomination to the people they help.

They said: “On behalf of all those in our community who face challenges such as losing their home or circumstances leading to financial or emotional distress, this nomination represents an acknowledgement that you are recognised, valued and have a voice for lasting, positive change.”

Phil Miles

Gazette Series:

Phil provides first aid to critically ill patients before an ambulance arrives. He is South Western Ambulance Service’s only community first responder in the area, covering Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and further afield.

The person who nominated Phil said: “Without him this area would not have a responder. It makes a huge difference to that patient.”

Phil said: “I am surprised but honoured to have been nominated. I enjoy being a responder and hope I can continue to provide assistance for local people.”

Allan Fawlk

Allan was one of the first people to use Gloucestershire’s Suicide Crisis Centre when it opened in 2013.

As he recovered he started volunteering their and is now a trustee.

He has undergone specialist training and spoken out about his own experiences on behalf of the charity.

Allan was nominated for his contribution to individuals in crisis through his support worker role, but also for his long-term contribution to increasing other people’s knowledge and understanding of men and suicide.
