Note

The previous owners of the Garden House were Sibylle Kreutzberger and Pamela Schwerdt. They both worked together at Sissinghurst Castle, first with Vita Sackville-West and then as joint head gardeners when it was taken over by the National Trust. When they retired in 1990 they moved to Condicote and the Garden House.

The garden here is a product of their 30 years wealth of experience at Sissinghurst and is very much a plantswoman's garden. Each plant is the best specimen of its variety and planted perfectly in combination with its partners.. The garden is a fine example of succession planting where in each area as plants finish and die back in their season fresh plants reach their peak and take over.

At the far end of the garden is the “woodland”, shady area which from February to April is a carpet of exotic bulbs. These in turn are replaced by long flowering late season perennials.

There are lovely trees chosen for their early season blossom including amelanchiers and malus transitora and others for their vivid fruits and autumn colours.The remaining flower beds begin with choice bulbs including 34 varieties of snowdrops move on to choice tulips followed by high season perennials. The garden is never without colour whatever the season.

There is a Mughal inspired gazebo which supports cordon apples and pears and clematis. There are several discrete seating areas to catch the sunshine at different times of the day.

In mid season there are many old fashioned shrub roses and ramblers and climbers covering the house and dry stone boundary walls.

Since Sybille has moved on it has been maintained to a high standard by the current owners one of whom is a professional gardener himself. The garden has featured in several magazines including the RHS Garden magazine, Country Living and Cotswold Life. It has also been open to the public on several occasions including the Open Gardens Scheme run by the NGS.

Directions

From our Moreton-in-Marsh office turn left and at the second mini roundabout turn right along the A44 continuing through the village of Bourton-on-the-Hill. Continue past the Horse and Groom public house, taking the next turning on the left toward Longborough and continue on this road for approximately two miles, eventually baring right (away from Longborough village) to the junction with the A424, turn right sign posted Condicote 1 1/2 miles and after a few hundred yards turn left sign posted Condicote continuing through the hamlet of Luckley and into Condicote village itself. This road will lead you to a circular road in the centre of the village. Drive round it on the left and stop next to the phone box (now defibrillator) and post box. Ahead of you is the Hinchwick road (signposted). Drive less than 200yds to the sharp bend and stop. Church View will be ahead of you, but bear sharp right down a private lane with a paddock on your left. Turn off the lane which bears left, past the parking area of Manor Farm House which will be directly ahead of you with two garages. Bear slightly left past that into the entrance of The Garden House drive which has grey slate chippings and park in front of the two garages. The front door is through little wrought iron gates into a courtyard.
