Sue Nicholls has revealed how Audrey Roberts will find herself in a Coronation Street “love triangle” when she finally admits she has feelings for Ken Barlow.
The hairdresser, who has been single since her disastrous relationship with conman Lewis Archer, decides she wants old pal Ken to be more than just a friend.
The only problem is – someone else also has the Weatherfield widower in her sights. Cathy Matthews’s sister Nessa arrives on the Street and makes it clear she fancies its longest-serving resident.
Sue told Soaplife that at first Audrey’s growing feelings for Ken, played by William Roache, panic her and she feels “a bit out of her depth”.
She’s also worried about what people will think so soon after the death of Ken’s beloved wife Deirdre.
But then she finds out a bigger problem could be newcomer Nessa, played by Sadie Shimmin.
“It’s immediately obvious Nessa fancies Ken – she’s straight in there! revealed Sue.
“She doesn’t give Audrey a second glance, especially once Audrey has made it clear she and Ken are not an item.”
The actress continued: “Nessa’s flirty and gregarious – very much like Audrey herself when she was younger.
“She doesn’t have the baggage of having known Deirdre or caring what other people think, so she can just put it out there and go for it.”
Asked if she thought Audrey and Ken would make a good couple, Sue said: “That is a difficult one. I was quite surprised when I was told about the storyline, but nicely surprised.
“In fairness it depends what they are going to do and how it develops.
“It’s nice that it is quite a slow burner and is coming from a mutual friendship. And as yet we don’t know if they will end up as a couple.
“For now Audrey’s just very peeved Nessa is trying to steal her companion from her.”
