GREAT War drama is coming to Kingshill House in Dursley when Trenchcoats for Goalposts is performed by Stroud Football Poets and Spaniel in the Works Theatre Company.

The performance on Saturday 27 February follows the journey of two brave Forest Green Rovers football players as they set off from Nailsworth for the front in the First World War.

Humour and poignancy will be used to recreate famous moments from the First World War. Be transported in theatre, spoken word and music to No Man’s Land in a moving, often funny, re-creation of the 1914 Christmas Truce.

The show features Jonny Fluffypunk Crispin Thomas, Stuart Butler, John Bassett, Bill Jones, Uta Baldauf, Paul Southcott and Out to Lunch.

John Bassett, the director and actor in Trenchcoats for Goalposts, said research carried out by local history groups as part of the Great War commemorations meant personal stories were being retold.

He continued: “People are no longer just names on war memorials but are real. For me as a writer and actor this is very important because we can bring these people to life and present their experiences to a wider audience. It stops people just being numbers of dead and gives more poignancy to the events.”

Spaniel in the Works Theatre Company has performed several war-time dramas before, including doing a special show for World Peace Day last year looking at the stories of the people at Gallipoli. Later this year they are hoping to do a performance based on local accounts from the Somme.

They last performed at Kingshill House in 2013 with a double bill of Women in Wartime.

Trenchcoats for Goalposts starts at 8pm. Tickets cost £8.50 in advance or £10 on the door. For more details contact Kingshill House on 01453 549133 or email admin@kingshillhouse.org.uk
