ONE of the classics of the musical genre, Fiddler on The Roof, is coming to the Barn Theatre in Cirencester this month performed by COS Productions (formerly Cirencester Operatic Society).

Set in 1905 in the Russian village of Anatevka, the story follows the life of Tevye, a poor milkman who strives to hold his family to well established Jewish traditions as outside influences encroach upon their lives.

It is a touching tale, expressing themes of love, honour, oppression and anguish, which are as relevant and understandable now as they were then.

The original 1964 Broadway production was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, winning nine, including Best Musical, Score and Book.

The show includes much loved tunes such as If I Were a Rich Man, Sunrise Sunset and Matchmaker, Matchmaker.

The experienced cast is directed by Bob Hills and Belinda Ogle-Skan, together with musical director Richard Abrams, who skilfully guided the COS cast of Jekyll and Hyde to win the accolade of ‘Best Chorus Singing’ in the South West Noda awards last year.

COS shows are locally recognised as being of an extremely high standard.

The Barn Theatre is the centrepiece of an ongoing £4 million development based at Ingleside House, a grade II listed building, due to open as a professional venue in 2018.
