RED, white and blue filled Thornbury with the return of the town’s popular carnival and American theme.

This year’s Thornbury Carnival attracted 13,000 visitors who enjoyed a day of American-themed entertainment and activities to coincide with the July 4 date.

The American influence could be seen as beads with the flag’s colours were thrown from parade vehicles in Mardi Gras fashion, and particularly during the carnival parade where popular singing group, The Femmes, performed on the back of an American truck.

The Thornbury Chamber of Commerce also purchased a stars and stripes flag to head-up the parade which started from the Castle School, following a route past St Mary’s Church and then up High Street.

Carnival organiser, David Goldring, said: “This was the sixth Thornbury Carnival, and it was bigger and better than before, with an estimated turnout of around 13,000 people.

“Lots of people enjoyed and supported the American theme, wearing the colours and enjoying the show of classic American cars.

“It was a gloriously sunny day and stalls and exhibitions filled the space well, but there was also plenty of space for people to relax and have picnics on the grass.

“The Band and Bugles of the Rifle Brigade, who led the parade, were a highlight for many, and overall, it was a very happy day enjoyed by many people, with jam-packed activities on offer."

MP for Thornbury and Yate Luke Hall, who attended the event, said: “I was delighted to see Thornbury showcasing its talent on Saturday, the parade itself was really something to be proud of with so many local groups involved.

“It was great to have a stand during the event and I particularly enjoyed meeting and speaking with so many others who were as passionate about our local area as I am."

Mr Goldring added: “It was hugely successful this year and we are very grateful to all our supporters who helped us along the way.

“Plans for the 2015 carnival are already underway, we are in the process of securing attractions and looking for a new theme.

“We had lots of new members helping out this year, but are looking for more people, of any age, to come and help next year.”
