STUDENTS from a school in Cam have made their way through to the regional stage of a national competition with their posters promoting world peace.

Three youngsters from Peak Academy earned themselves cash prizes and are in with a chance of a winning a trip to America with their entries for an annual peace poster contest held by Lions International.

Topping the local competition was Aimee Short, 13, followed by Scott Mace and Kieran McGann, the same age.

The theme for this year’s competition was ‘share peace’ which, in the judgement of Dursley Lion’s, was best reflected in Aimee’s work, which makes use of a range of national flags.

Dave Butterfield of Dursley Lions said: “We thought the entries from Peak Academy were really good, and some of the students have poured their heart and soul into their work.

“Giving Aimee first place came from a consensus decision between the Lions. There’s so much going on in her piece and she followed the theme very well. The flags show she’s obviously put in some research.

“The Lions are so pleased to be supporting the Peak Academy and we’re very impressed by what we’ve seen from visits to the school.”

President of the club Keith Griffiths added: “The standards we see in entries for this competition have grown and grown each year.”

As winner, Aimee will receive a prize of £100, with Scott taking £70 and £50 for Kieran.

Their entries will now be judged in the competition’s regional stage. After that is the final national stage of the competition in which the winner will earn themselves a holiday in the United States.

Headteacher at the school Richard Lewis spoke to the Gazette about his pride in his student’s achievement.

“We’re so proud of our students and think it’s a fantastic achievement. We value all subjects at the academy but the students do take a particular interest in art.”
