TWO police officers were attacked after responding to a brawl in Cam over the weekend.

One of the special constables assaulted on Saturday night in Bramble Drive was knocked unconscious and had to be taken to hospital.

A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault. Another man, aged 33, was later arrested on suspicion of the same offence. They have both since been released on bail.

Police were called to the scene, a fight between several people in Bramble Drive, shortly after 9pm on Saturday.

The first responders at the scene, two special constables (volunteers), were assaulted in a violent attack which left one of them unconscious and in need of medical attention.

Police helicopters and additional support units were called to the scene to assist in restoring order in the area.

A 33-year-old man and 31-year old, both from Dursley, were arrested on the evening for assault and have both since been released on bail. The special constable taken to hospital has been discharged.

Detective inspector Hannah Mackie told the Gazette: “This was a violent incident which has no doubt disturbed the local community resulting in an assault upon a long-serving, voluntary police officer who was simply trying to perform his duty.

“Thankfully he has not sustained a major injury.

“We hope the public will support us in investigating this matter and that any witnesses who have not already contacted the police will do so.”

Police are appealing for information on the incident. They particularly want to speak to people who may have taken photos of the scene which could help with the investigation.

Andy Poole, of Stroud Police, said: "These were unpaid special constables giving up their time to serve the community.

"They were the first on the scene when they were assaulted.

"We are appealing for witnesses who may have information and particularly anybody who may have taken photos of the scene which may help with the investigation."

If you have any information or photographs which may help police with their investigation call them on 101 citing incident number incident 426 of June 18.
