WRITTEN and performed by actor and pianist Michael Lunts, 'A Meeting of Minds' is a fascinating recreation, in both drama and music, of the strange story behind Rachmaninov's famous Second Piano Concerto, best known to the general public as the soundtrack to the film 'Brief Encounter'. The origins of this work are every bit as dramatic as the film it has become associated with. The Concerto was created out of a ‘strange encounter’ between Rachmaninov and the hypnotist Dr Dahl to whom the work was dedicated, a real ‘Meeting of Minds’ in fact, explored and re-imagined in this intriguing play with music.
Integrated into the action are live performances of some of Rachmaninov's greatest music for piano, including the famous C sharp minor Prelude and, of course, the celebrated Piano Concerto itself, here given a 'tour de force' performance from an artist who crosses the boundaries between classical music and theatre.
Michael has performed his shows all over the UK, including a number of performances at both the Armstrong and Cossham Halls in Thornbury, with his one-man shows combining drama, song and music.
Michael returns to the Cossham Hall, Thornbury, on Saturday September 17 at 7.30pm in a performance of 'A Meeting of Minds' which also inaugurates the newly-restored piano in the Cossham Hall. Tickets £13 to include Interval Nibbles from Thornbury Town Hall or call 01454 412272, with proceeds in aid of the Armstrong Hall Redevelopment Appeal
