A NEW service in Thornbury has been launched, created for young people by young people.

The Thornbury Youth Hub was created after it was suggested that clubs, services and other opportunities for younger residents were not promoted enough in the community.

An online service, the directory of groups and events which includes a website and social media accounts, are the creation of a group of students at the Castle School.

The team, who span all year groups, worked with MyThornbury creator Claire Jaggard to design and create the webpage off the MyThornbury site, before working Thornbury-based design company It Starts to create a logo.

Castle School teacher Elizabeth Harwood, who has worked alongside the team from the outset told the Gazette how proud she was of the students’ creation.

She said: “It's been a fantastic educational opportunity to learn about logos and branding, and they're also getting first-hand experience of using social media as a form of advertising.

“I believe that the Youth Hub will be a really positive resource for the local community; it was a great project where the school and the town community could work together and I hope this will encourage further similar projects in future.”

Mrs Jaggard added how impressed she was with the project, and the children’s’ drive to produce something special, and said it was a pleasure to work with them.

The group have also taken social media head on, setting up an Instagram account, @thornbury_youth_hub and are currently in the process of creating a Facebook page.

Thornbury mayor Cllr Helen Harrison, who inspired the venture after first raising concerns for the lack of a service, praised the group for their ingenuity and willingness to help others.

She said: “It’s a wonderful platform for the young people of Thornbury which has the potential to be a truly great service for other young people in the town.

“What makes it even more special is that these pupils did not just wait for someone else to come up with the idea, or to put in the work, they have working together and showing some incredible savvy by doing it themselves.”
