A RUNNING club has chosen a young girl with cerebral palsy as their club charity.

Ten-year-old Bailey Griffiths, from Cam, is profoundly deaf and has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, meaning it affects her whole body, causing limited movement.

The condition touches on every aspect of Bailey’s life, and she cannot stand or walk independently.

Dursley Running Club was approached by Karen Eadon, who nominated Bailey by writing to the club committee.

The club donates 12.5 per cent of its race profit to a nominated charity, as well as doing other events that raise money for charity.

Bailey’s family are very active in raising funds to ensure Bailey has the best equipment available to her to make her life as independent and pain free as possible.

Karen said: “When I first heard of Bailey, her nan was days away from doing a sky dive to raise funds towards equipment.

“She is now planning a wing-walk and she has said that there is nothing she wouldn’t do to provide funds for Bailey.

“As Bailey gets older and grows bigger, she needs new equipment to help both her and her family manage.

“The family recently attended a mobility road show and at the show they came across a new type of powered wheelchair that will enable Bailey to stand.”

The chair, for which funds of £22,000 had to be raised, is expected to give Bailey a greater range of possibilities in life.

Dave Durden, of Dursley Running Club, said: “The committee were all inspired by Bailey and her family, keeping positive and smiling through all the challenges.

“The committee also felt it would be great to support a local charity and we feel that some money from us can hopefully help give Bailey a better quality of life.

Of choosing to contact Dursley Running Club to help support Bailey, Karen said: “From a group of people who use their feet for their hobby to a child who cannot use hers - as small an offering as it may be, to a local girl, would be amazing."
