PEOPLE living in Dursley will be paying the highest council tax charges in the district for the next financial year.

A 27.68 per cent increase in Dursley Town Council’s share of the bill for residents to help pay for an additional member of staff and its Long Street car park project puts the parish’s precept above last year’s highest parish, Kingswood.

The average Band D household in the district will pay £1,743.72 over the next 12 months – a £76.31 (4.58 per cent) rise from last year.

At £1,853.03 for the same category home, Dursley is the most expensive while Alderley and Owlpen residents will have the lowest bills (£1,660.20) comparatively with neither charging a precept at parish level.

The biggest share of council tax goes to Gloucestershire County Council and its 4.49 per cent increase, which includes a two per cent ring-fenced social care levy, decided earlier this month equates to £1,232.21 for a Band D home this year – up from £1,179.26 in the 2017/18 financial year.

With a £12-a-year (5.59 per cent) rise agreed, the police and crime commissioner’s £226.49 precept for the average home is the second largest portion.

Stroud District Council’s request has gone up by 2.99 per cent to £201.50 while the average parish/town council precept has risen by 7.06 per cent to £83.52.

Final agreement on council tax bills for the coming financial year was made at the full meeting of Stroud District Council on Thursday by a majority vote.
