MUD, mud, mud, this was the story of a recent WI walking holiday which two of our members reported upon.

Despite some walks being cancelled due to the adverse conditions under foot they enjoyed their visit to St Ives, Cornwall.

Our president has also been on a WI holiday visiting historic houses and heritage of Lincolnshire.

She gave amusing anecdotes of this most interesting time with other members of Avon Federation.

Nine members celebrated birthdays in April. They were pleased to receive rose buttonholes and everyone tucked into cake with their tea and coffee.

At short notice we were pleased to welcome Susan Weaver from “Paul’s Place”.

She gave an entertaining talk about her work as a volunteer over the last few years with physically disabled adults in their centre.

“Paul’s Place is a registered charity based in Coalpit Heath and operating across Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath & NE Somerset and offers a wide range of craft and sport opportunities.

It began in 1995 and supports adults with physical, cognitive and sensory impairments.  From the stories Susan told we could sense that this a very happy and supportive day facility where the social interaction between the staff and members is something very special.

How do you celebrate a 99th birthday?

Old Sodbury WI ladies will celebrate by making buttonholes, eating birthday cake and having fun on Wednesday, May 16.

On a serious note members will also discuss this year’s resolution which urges all WI members to recognise the importance of parity between mental health and physical health.

The NFWI wishes to lobby parliament for better support for mental illness.

Our craft group are busy with plans to enter Hawkesbury show with a scene from “Alice in Wonderland” and our book club are currently reading “Birdcage Walk” by Helen Dunmore which features familiar places in Bristol.

A successful coffee morning at members home has raised £155 towards a sound system in the Village Hall.

We very much look forward to its installation as this will enhance our meetings and make them accessible and enjoyable for all participants.

Old Sodbury WI meets on third Wednesday each month at the Village Hall.

New members and visitors are welcome. For details ring 01454 315161.
