Wotton in Bloom has launched a butterfly hunt event for children.

Many traders in the town who have entered the Wotton in Bloom shop window competition have placed a decorative, named butterfly in the window.

Children 11 years and under can enter the competition by putting the name of the butterfly next to the name of the shop on their entry form.

Entry is free, and forms are available from Wotton Heritage Centre, Wotton One-Stop Shop, the Coventry Building Society and the Cotswold Bookroom. The forms are also being distributed through schools.

There will be prizes in two categories: five years and under and six - 11years. The competition runs until mid-August.

Wotton in Bloom has already joined in with Wotton Rocks, where painted stones are left around the town and surrounding countryside for children to find.

This is the ninth year that Wotton in Bloom has worked to put up floral displays in the town, but the first entry into any competition.

Judges from Heart of England in Bloom, one of 17 regional heats of RHS Britain in Bloom, visited the town on Thursday 5th July.

Wotton in bloom chairman Sue Hunt said: “The combined efforts of so many of our townsfolk have been truly marvellous, and we couldn’t have done it without them.

“We now have to wait until the awards ceremony in mid-September to find out if we have won an award. We all have our fingers crossed in anticipation!”

Britain in Bloom has been running since 1963, and the judging is no longer solely based on horticulture achievement which accounts for 50 per cent of the 100 achieveable points. The rest are split between two other criteria: environmental responsibility and community participation.
