A GROUP of Thornbury residents held a craft session to raise money for a mental health charity.

Crafternoon for Mind was held at St Mary's Primary School on Sunday, July 29.

A number of workshops were held, teaching everything from still life drawing to African drumming.

Participants also had the chance to have a go at manga drawing, card making and Indian block printing.

Jeanette Hibbert, local artist who helped organise the event, said: "I chose Mind because I know many people who struggle with mental health issues and the right support just isn’t out there.

"I’m also very aware that there is still a lack of understanding about mental health issues and the stigma remains obvious. We still have a long way to go before people feel they can be honest and reach out for help when it’s needed. If someone reaches out then that help has to be available."

The event raised just under £300 but was match funded by Jeanette's employer, Legal and General, to make a total of £600.

Jeanette added: "I thought the crafternoon went really well and allowed for the community to come together in a meaningful, creative and fun way. I think the fact that we came together as a group to make the event happen made it extra special. There was such a positive, happy atmosphere on the day.

"Creativity is essential for a healthy mind and something we do less now than ever. Trying new things builds new neural pathways and being focused on just one thing allows mindfulness and reduces the internal chatter and stress levels."

The group is planning to hold another crafting session before Christmas.
