AVON and Somerset Police have revealed that Chipping Sodbury and Yate is being targeted by scammers.

The police released a statement on the issue after they received mutliple visits to the station in Chipping Sodbury from older residents in the area.

According to police, the callers would demand unpaid tax over the phone, posing as Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The fraudster then claims that non-payment of the tax will lead to arrest.

Action Fraud, the national fraud reporting centre released in a statement: "Thankfully none of the people who came into the police station have fallen for this con.

"The fraudsters are so convincing that people have been left worried. We’re keen to make sure others know how to deal with this."

The police have also released details of how to react if you are contacted by the unexpected call.

"If you are concerned about your tax status, contact HMRC directly using a number from the phone book, HMRC correspondence you know to be genuine, or from gov.uk," they released in a statement.

"If you suspect you have been contacted by a fraudster, report it and receive a police crime reference number by calling Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, or using the online fraud reporting tool on their website, actionfraud.police.uk."

You can also find more information regarding fraud and phone scams on the Avon and Somerset Police website, avonandsomerset.police.uk.

The police ended, saying: "We’d ask you to help your vulnerable elderly relatives or friends keep their finances secure. Make sure they know about this scam."
