A BRAVE woman is cycling from London to Katmandu completely solo to help homeless children.

Rebecca Waters from Tormarton, and just 22 years old, is cycling from London to Katmandu in Nepal all within 100 days, not only to raise vital funds for Nepal-based Street Child - a charity which provides education for children in marginalised rural and urban communities across earth-quake devastated Nepal - but to also work for the charity to when she arrives there.

What's also impressive is that Rebecca will be cycling the entire route on her own with no back up team.

Louise Waters, Rebecca’s mum, said: “Rebecca is going totally solo.”

“She started three weeks ago and is on day 25 now, and has already travelled through France, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia and Slovenia.”

After Slovenia, Rebecca, who has been cycling competitively since she was 16, will be heading onto towards Georgia, and following that, she will be taking a gruelling cycle route through to Nepal, but not before covering countries Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and India.

For a cyclist on their own, it’s a tough ride, but as a woman, it’s a risky one, too.

Louise said: “Rebecca is nearly in Bulgaria now, and so far it’s been okay because she’s been travelling through Europe, but after that, things change a little.”

For a mother, it’s a nerve-wracking time.

Said Louise: “It’s a long 100 days, that’s for certain, especially once she’s through Europe.”

“She crossed the Black Sea on a cargo ship and has been wild camping and sleeping on sofas, but’s she’s doing well – she’s always enjoyed travelling.”

Rebecca, who’s averaging 80 to 100 miles-a-day on her bike, will be working for Street Child for six weeks once she arrives in Nepal, before boarding a return flight home to her long-awaited home.

But it’s something her mother is immensely proud of.

Louise said: “Rebecca is literally cycling all the way to Nepal – she’s amazing.”
