Members of the Bristol Ensemble, Bristol's professional Chamber Orchestra, will visit Thornbury for a concert next month.

Led by violinist Roger Huckle, the orchestra will perform a concert of popular classical music at the United Reform Church on Saturday, October 20.

Following five previous Thornbury Autumn concerts, Roger has designed a feast of strings with pieces from some of the world's most famous composers: Mendelssohn, Holst, Grieg and Elgar.

Elgar's Serenade for Strings will be played in three enchanting movements.

These 'little tunes' as he called them, are the most frequently performed of all his works.

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in D minor, composed when was just 13, has been popular with audiences since its rediscovery in the middle of the 20th century by Yehudi Menuhin.

Gustav Holst's St Paul's Suite, named after the London school where he was the music director, is an opportunity to spot the well known folk tunes woven together within the piece.

Finally, Edvard Grieg's Holberg Suite is a collection of baroque-style dances, written in 1912 but inspired by a famous 17th century Norwegian playwright.

The Bristol Ensemble is a musician's collective bringing together the best of the region's performers.

This concert is part of the fund raising for the Armstrong Hall Redevelopment Project (Phase 1) and will begin at 7.30pm.

Tickets are £16 each, and include interval finger food. They can be obtained from Thornbury Town Hall or by phoning 01454 412272.
