Friends and family of two Alveston boys tragically killed in a car accident have gathered to mark the 20th anniversary of their death.

Dean Hurkett, 16, and Tom Lewy, 17, lost their lives on September 20, 1998 when their car collided with another on Gloucester Road, Thornbury.

Family and friends gathered at Alveston Cemetery on Saturday, September 22.

They then went to a shelter on the Lime Kiln Field which was erected in 2007 as a memorial to the two boys.

Following their death, friends and family founded the charity ‘Team’ - a portmanteau of Tom and Dean’s names - to raise the money needed.

Pupils from Marlwood School, where Tom and Dean used to attend, also helped to construct the shelter.

Speaking about the shelter Lesley Mouncher, Dean’s Aunt, said: “We raised quite a bit of money after the accident.

“We needed something to focus on and we focussed on raising money.

“As the years went on the money sat there so we decided to put it to good use.

“We were able to put the shelter there for the kids that play on the park to be able to enjoy. We do go there from time to time.”

The shelter cost a total of £7,200, most of which was met by donations to the charity with Alveston Parish Council contributing the balance.

After leaving the shelter the group finished at the White Hart in Olveston to raise a glass to their memory.

“It was just nice to reminisce. After something that was so awful it was nice to come together to take a moment to remember them.

“It was his friends who organised it. They still remember that time 20 years on.”

"That was nice for our family,” added Lesley.

Dean's mother Tracey Chapman said she was ‘overwhelmed’ by the number of friends and family who turned up to remember Tom and Dean.

“We were all truly moved that their memories still live on in the hearts of their friends.

“We also would like to thank Craig Meredith, Jess Stephens and Megan Symmonds for organising everything,” she said.
