It was another good day at The New Lawn on Saturday as we preserved our unbeaten record.

The wet weather was soon forgotten, but not the cold. The fact we are the only unbeaten side in the Football League means congratulations are deserved. How different this early autumn is to the haphazard Hockaday days or the skill-starved Pennock regime. Quality football has prevailed. Newport were a swift busy and deserved to draw a rousing and enjoyable game. Our defence continued their fine record of not conceding more than one goal a game.

Perhaps the team could be a little more incisive in the final third of the field, taking more of the chances our measured attacking play produces, but this is not the time for criticism.

I enjoyed my chick-pea and rice lunch as well as a winning smile from Jilly Cooper. It was pleasing to see Charlie Cooper and have a pleasant chat. He's a worthy young man with his feet planted on the ground in true common sense fashion. I walked back to my car in good spirits.

Meanwhile, Gloucestershire Cricket Club applications are invited for four places on the executive board. Many qualities and skills were asked for. I feel it can be narrowed to two; common sense and love of the game. Closing date is the end of the month. Get writing.
