The following is a reader-submitted letter from this weeks' Gazette (Oct 11).

The recent request from the Royal Mail for empty crisp packets to be put into an envelope before being returned to their manufacturer, together with the 38 Degrees campaign for their return, bought a ‘crinkly’ smile to my face.

In the interests of reducing the amount of currently non-recyclable plastic why not stop buying crisps and other snack food being sold in this type of packaging. This would offer at least a three fold benefit:

1. Saving money;

2. Reducing the amount of ‘junk’ food being consumed; and

3. Reducing the waste currently going to landfill, or worse, into the water systems.

In addition the Royal Mail wouldn’t have to put vehicles on the roads to return all the these empty packets.

If crisp etc sales were to decline I wonder how long the various product manufacturers would take before introducing ‘smart’ packaging?

Might I suggest edible packets, they might taste as good as their contents!
