STRONG winds brought a tree down tree in Cam last week, blocking the road for just over ten hours.

The large sycamore fell on Cam Pitch, just after 6.30am on Friday morning.

This followed a Met Office yellow weather warning for wind in parts of the county, as Storm Callum swept the region.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Police said: "Shortly after 6.35am on Friday, October 12, we received a report of a large tree falling down on Cam Pitch.

"This was believed to be weather related.

"Officers attended and closed the road. The council's highways department and Western Power were also contacted due to proximity of overhead cables."

Resident Richard Blackwell-Whitehead said: "The highways contractors arrived at 9.30am and left at 7pm.

"The main parts of the tree were taken by a local farmer at 4pm.

"After this the task was to move the main root base, which protruded about 1.5 metres into the road.

"The root base and stump was too big to lift with the tractor, so they decided to cut the the stump into several pieces and push them into the bank with the tractor.

"There was a good community spirit, with a local guy providing mugs of tea to the contractors throughout the day," he said.
