Past and present female councillors from the area have been honoured in South Gloucestershire Council's 'Inspiring Women' exhibition.

Yate Town Council's Chris Willmore and South Gloucestershire Council's Sue Walker were honoured in the project, whilst Margaret Bracey and former Town Clerk Susan Tubey were also selected.

There were also inclusions for two former councillors. Mary Draper and Gladys Nelson died in 2011 and 2008 respectively, however the new exhibition has remembered them for the work they did in the area as well.

The ‘Inspiring Women: the legacy of the First World War in South Gloucestershire’ project showcases the achievements of South Gloucestershire women from the First World War to the present day.

The, national lottery funded exhibition will run at various locations across the area until July 2019.

Councillor Sue Walker admitted it was nice to be included in the project. Particularly in the area in which she has been a councillor for 39 years.

"It is really nice to be recognised, the work of the other ladies is amazing.

"They are all just really lovely ladies, Susan in particular deserves it because she has done so much for Yate Town Council over the years."

Susan Tubey served as Town Clerk of Yate for over 24 years, from 1984 until 2008. She is now 'enjoying retirement'.

All three of Sue Walker, Chris Willmore and Margaret Bracey have served as Mayor of Yate at some point during their time as councillors.

Cllr Chris Willmore was also pleased at the way in which the exhibition would publicise women in the area.

"It is really good to be a part of it, but the main thing with the project is to encourage women," she said.

"There are a lot of women in our area who say 'I can't do that', and this works to tell them that actually they can.

"You can do anything and you shouldn't be constrained.

"The exhibition is saying to all women that we can have an impact."

Yate Town Councillor and Mayor of Yate John Ford revealed his pride at the 'public recognition' the women are receiving.

"I am so pleased that these women who have contributed so much to making Yate the open and inclusive society that it is today, are getting due public recognition after so much dedication to our town." He said.
