A 10-year-old girl from Thornbury did ‘trick or treat’ a little differently this year.

Instead of asking for sweets, Amelia Ashfield collected donations for Thornbury Foodbank.

With the help of her parents and sister Zoe, 8, Amelia went round every house on Otter Way and Badger Road.

The response was overwhelming, with 186kg of food and toiletries collected for those in need.

Donations from a class at Matt Fiddes Martial Arts, which the whole family attends, and from her mum's work colleagues took Amelia's total to more than 200kg.

The community challenge was part of Amelia’s Junior Certified Instructor Training at the group.

Mum Simone said people’s generosity showed the community spirit of both the martial arts group and the Bloor Homes community.

As well as the donations Amelia received numerous letters of support and a few treats to keep for herself.

Foodbank volunteer Rod McLellan said: "The Foodbank team were amazed at the huge amount of food donations collected by Amelia.

"We were extremely impressed with her initiative and also with the response from her neighbours, her martial arts group, and her Mum's colleagues!

"The food will be put to good use in supporting those in need in our community."
