A deer died when it wandered into the road after getting its head trapped in a dumped plastic bag.
The bewildered deer wandered onto Bowbridge Road in Newark before the unfortunate incident took place.
Newark and Sherwood District Council leader David Lloyd said: "This was a totally avoidable tragedy and it demonstrates the consequences of somebody just dumping a cheap carrier bag.
"It appears that this poor creature inadvertently got its head stuck in the carrier bag and was unable to break free - Its vision would have been severely impaired and regrettably it may have strayed into the road.
"Quite simply had that bag not been dumped then the deer would almost certainly still be alive."
A spokesperson for the council said that the death shows how discarded plastics can be dangerous.
Sadly, council workers said that the muntjac deer had a broken neck, and may have been pregnant.
The deer was found on Wednesday, November 7 and the bag was still over its head.
