Members of Sodbury Town Council have been left absolutely furious as vandals 'completely wrecked' the new public toilets in Chipping Sodbury High Street.

Last winter, the council had to close the toilets in the Clock Tower on the street because of damage to the plumbing caused by freezing temperatures and then snow.

Since then, repair work has been carried out, with only one of the toilets re-opened as STC tried to get the money to update and re-open the others.

However, over the weekend, vandalism has meant that the toilets will now be closed for an even longer period.

On Saturday, November 17 there was some minor vandalism to the sink and toilet, however that was repaired on Sunday morning by a contractor.

Later that evening though, it was trashed again. This time the vandals also destroyed the locking mechanism and the door as well as inside.

Leader of Sodbury Town Council Phil Rumney revealed that the entirety of the organisation were 'horrified' to learn of the damage.

"We are getting a lot of stick from some in the community about why the other toilets aren't open yet, so it is upsetting," he said.

"We have spent a lot of money on the block to try and make it nice for the area in the future and then some selfish, mindless idiots have ruined it for everyone else.

"The damage means that the date for re-opening the toilets completely has been pushed back.

"It wasn't finished that long ago and we are absolutely fuming that when we are trying to get it back up and running, someone would come and do that."

Since the re-opening of the toilet the council introduced a coin box which meant that all users had to pay a small charge to enter.

This was done to try and prevent the prospect of further damage being done to the facility, however it has now been completely trashed.

A spokesperson for the council also revealed that since the turn of the year they had spent significant money on the block.

Figures show that £10,291 had been spent on the refurbishment this year alone.
