The M4 motorway haa reopened following a a number of multi-vehicle crashes this morning.

Immediately after the accident, which happened at around 7am this morning between junctions 16 and 17, commuters were trapped in their cars for over an hour.

Witnesses at the scene say that up to eight vehicles collided.

A large section of the motorway remained closed while emergency services crews pick up debris, including thousands of screws and nails from the carriageway.

However all lanes have now reopened, and slow traffic is beginning to clear.

There were additional reports of two further accidents, one on the M4 westbound at junction 15. Traffic was held in all three lanes following an accident near the entry slip road, at just after 8am today.

The motorway was blocked eastbound between J15 and J14 due to a multiple vehicle collision near Chippenham. three cars are understood to have collided with a lorry on this section of the motorway.

No injuries were believed to have been sustained following the accident.
