A missing man's life has been saved thanks to a conscientious member of the public, and the keen nose of one of Gloucestershire's police dogs.

Tony Smith was reported missing and vulnerable from Stonehouse yesterday evening and police appealed for the public's help to find him as they were concerned for his welfare.

But thanks to a woman contacting the police to let them know where he had last been seen, and the expert police dog team on the force Tony was located overnight.

It is understood that Quest used the information phoned in by the conscientious member of the public as a starting point, and Tony was found in nearby dense undergrowth.

He is understood to have been rescued thanks to Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and an ambulance crew.

The missing man is now in hospital, and although his condition is unknown the police dog has been credited with saving his life.

Stella the Staffie, another police dog from the force posted on her timeline to say that she was 'very proud of her brother PD Quest'.

"Very proud of my brother PD Quest who tonight has searched and found Tony who was missing," the post said.
"My brother PD Quest searched the area and went into dense undergrowth and found Tony lying on the ground alive.

"With the help of Glosfire & Ambulance Tony is now safely on route to hospital.

"Lots of treats for PD Quest and a massive thank you to the lady who phoned with the sighting of Tony - she saved his life."
