The following is a reader-submitted letter.

In the coming days our MP Luke Hall has a momentous Brexit decision in front of him.

In the referendum he campaigned for remain. After the referendum he felt a democratic duty to respect the result. I understand why that was his position at the time. But things have changed since then.

We now have clear evidence that the referendum was not democratic. The Electoral Commission has found the Leave EU and Vote Leave campaigns guilty of cheating, and referred the matter to the police.

We now have the level of economic detail that was not presented at the referendum. We can now see the proposed deal would leave Britain poorer and with less control. It’s a much worse deal than the deal we’ve already got inside the EU.

Business knows this, and the public knows it. In November 2018 YouGov ran an exceptionally large poll of 25,000 electors throughout Great Britain using a technique which correctly indicated a hung Parliament in the last general election.

It found that in the 631 seats surveyed (all but those in Northern Ireland) there was majority support for a People’s Vote, in 575 constituencies, once 'don’t knows' were excluded. Here in Thornbury and Yate it was 54 per cent in favour and 46 per cent against.

MPs are elected to make decisions on our behalf having looked in detail at the decisions in front of them. Britain can either continue to benefit from being part of the world’s largest trading bloc, influencing rules so they work in our favour, or be on the outside looking in when decisions are made that affect our economy and our future. We cannot have it both ways.

Luke Hall needs to have the courage of his convictions. He needs to support a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal with an option to stay. Not doing so is bad for the country and his constituents.
