The work of volunteer groups set up to help support an Alveston school after it was placed in special measures is beginning to bear fruit.

Friends or Marlwood (FOMS) was set up a few months after the school was placed into special measures in July 2017.

As well as holding gardening days to tidy the school grounds they have provided several pieces of equipment to the school including a 3D printer.

#WeAreMarlwood began more recently following the school’s appearance on the BBC documentary, School.

The programme, which also featured Thornbury’s Castle school as well as Mangotsfield, exposed the shocking funding issues faced by schools following government cuts.

After initially asking former pupils to share their memories of their time at the school, the group, along with FOMS are now aiming to supply the school with much-needed funds and equipment.

The floor of the staff room was recently refurbished free of charge by Bristol company Aztech.

A WishList has been created, allowing people to buy items the school is in need of.

Other donations already received include sporting equipment, stationary and various art supplies.

The group is still on the lookout for other items including compute equipment and a dishwasher.
