A DURSLEY family’s magical Christmas display in aid of sick babies has been targeted by an internet troll.

With colourful decorations, Santa, children’s presents and more, Kate and Craig Jones’ house in St George’s Road is fit to burst with the Christmas spirit.

As well as a joy to behold, the display is also a fundraiser for the Special Care Baby Unit at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.

Kate and Craig wanted to support the unit as it has played such an important part in their lives.

Their daughter, Lena, 15, and two of their grandchildren, Maisey-Rae, who is just 10 weeks old and Ashleigh, 11, all suffered problems after birth, but pulled through, thanks to the amazing care they received at the unit.

“ We nearly lost all three of them,” said Kate.

“Ashleigh had to be christened in hospital, as we was told she wouldn’t survive the night.

“But she’s thriving now.”

The couple have been putting on an impressive festive display at their home in Kingshill for over 10 years, but this is the first time that they have tried fundraising as well.

Kate and Craig say everyone is welcome to enjoy their display, which sees Santa giving out presents to children every evening, 5pm to 6pm. for free, but donations are most welcome too.

Imagine then their surprise when their festive celebrations attracted the unwanted attentions of an internet troll.

After a picture of their decorated house was posted on social media, Kate says she was shocked by one woman’s response.

“She was being really nasty, asking how we could afford the electricity for it all, and how could people be sure the money is actually going to charity,” said Kate.

“It was heart breaking,” said Kate.

“I had a bit of a tear in my eye when I saw it.”

Feeling very low about it all, Kate took to the Dursley Matters Facebook page to put the record straight.

She wrote: “I find it with a heavy heart that I have to explain myself to everyone, but I see a few people are being very vocal on their thoughts of us and our Christmas lights.”

After explaining the ins and outs about the electricity and how people can be sure the money is all going to charity, Kate wrapped up with: “It’s sad to see we’re being ridiculed and judged for being happy people who love giving back.

“That said, Santa WILL be here tomorrow and we WILL keep doing this to please others.”

It wasn’t long before a stream of positive comments started to flood in.

“We’ve had so many positive comments.

“It’s just been amazing.

“And so much good has come out of it.

“It’s been great to hear how much support we’ve got out there.

“And if the person who made the comments turns up here with their children, that would be fine.

“We don’t bear a grudge.”
