Volunteers across Thornbury were honoured at a special event last week.

Thornbury Volunteer Centre hosted their annual Christmas thank you lunch on Friday, December 7 for volunteers and volunteer-involving organisations in the Thornbury and district community.

They welcomed special guests Tom Frost, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, and Cllr Shirley Holloway, Thornbury Town Mayor, together with 60 guests representing 26 organisations.

As they are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year, they combined this with an award ceremony to recognise the contribution that volunteers make.

Awards were given out to Thornbury in Bloom, Thornbury Christmas Lights Association and Thornbury Magazine.

Essilor Ltd also picked up an award for their strong volunteering focus.

A team from the company regularly help look up Filnore Woods and volunteer opportunities have been posted on staff notice boards.

They have also supported people with low-level mental health issues through volunteering placements within the company.

The Swan Inn was also recognised.

Landlady Sandra Davies has raised more than £100,000 for various charities through fundraising events including their weekly charity quiz night.

Thornbury Volunteer Centre also presented their annual Alan Hudson Award for Volunteering Achievement to Sandi Shallcross of Thornbury and District Museum.

Sandi has led the museum through three successful rounds of accreditation.
