Emergency services attended a major incident in Bristol City Centre today.
Ambulance crews, police and firefighters are on the scene as Canons Way near the waterfront was closed.
Police made a statement that moved to allay some fears over the incident and also reported that nobody went to hospital for treatment.
Avon and Somerset Police said in a statement: "We were called at 3.10pm to Canons Way in central Bristol to reports of criminal damage.
"Staff at a supermarket reported that at 12.30pm today an unknown substance had been thrown over a window. A small number of staff members had later reported feeling unwell.
"As a precautionary measure fire and ambulance services attended and a small cordon was put in place in the pedestrianised area so experts could establish the nature of the substance.
"The scene has now been examined and the substance is not believed to be harmful.
"The area has been cleared and the cordon will now be lifted."
