A group on Thornbury students have been named regional champions in the F1 in Schools competition.

Blue Rockets Racing, comprising The Castle School's Josh Ocone, Ben Payne, Alastair White-Horne and Dan Church, were named South West champions at an event on Wednesday, January 9.

The team had to design and build their own miniature car to race down a straight 25m track.

As well as speed the teams were judged on their design and understanding of the engineering involved.

They also had to produce a portfolio and give a presentation to judges.

A message on The Castle School's Facebook page said the 'effort they have put into this is exceptional'.

Team Manager Josh Ocone added: "We were first out of all the teams competing and additionally won the Sponsorship and Marketing Award for the second year in a row.

"Everyone in the team is ecstatic right now, however I would just like to say thank you to every one of our sponsors and supporting staff, your support is invaluable to us."

The team will be competing in the national finals in March with the winners representing Great Britain at the 2019 World Finals.
